It's easy to ignore additional tools but after one year in Procreate, beginners will feel the lack of features and would probably move and pay for a new app anyway. However, from now on, unless the performance of ASP, its brush engine or something else really lets down, I would probably start recommending ASP even for absolute beginners. Regarding beginner friendliness: Procreate has (a tiny) upper hand here, just because the interface is more minimal and a bit less overwhelming. Regarding pricing, it's around 10$ per year (~50$ lifetime), compared to Procreate's 10$ (?) lifetime. However, I found it just like an hour ago and I'm still trying to fix my Apple Pay to buy it. CSP was just superlaggy when I tried it but so far ASP was supersnappy. I still need to see how fast it runs and how responsive it is, especially with larger files. project organization, file management is definitely nicer.brush settings are prettier (I still need to check if ASP's brush engine is as powerful).features nobody needs (3D painting, hover feature (only works on the newest ipads)).you can mirror and grayscale reference image. selections are outlined at their borders like in Photoshop (instead of having the "migraine pattern" for non-selected areas in Procreate).blending modes are organized in groups (Procreate's blending modes are a mess).layers with the "Add" blending mode don't create strange discolorations that you get in procreate.color picking from current layer only, disregarding blending mode (really REALLY useful if not essential for a more "pro" workflow with many multiply (for shadows) and add (for lights) etc layers). So here's a quick summary of really nice things I found so far in ASP (after trying for half an hour) that Procreate still doesn't have: But it's nowhere nearly as ugly and messy as CSP on iPad.īut what got me going about it is just the presence of basic features people have been asking for for years from Procreate. Others, like brush settings, are a bit less sleek and intuitive but I guess I'll get used to that and I hope they will improve. Many things about the interface just make more sense than in Procreate. The interface is minimal, but not to the degree it starts hurting functionality. The 5.3 update from a few days back broke a few things so I decided to try Artstudio Pro (ASP).Īnd oh boy, I'm not paid by Artstudio Pro (sure would've loved to be lol), but I love it after quickly trying it and I'm writing this quick review and asking for your opinions to vent my frustration with Procreate.ĪSP seems to hit the sweet spot between Photoshop and Procreate for me. Lately, I've been complaining to my friends, my mother and her cat about the lack of basic features in Procreate (like color pick from current layer, which people have been asking for for 5 years) and bugs.
